Build Muscle

Nutritional Guidelines

Calories - Everything starts with the all-important calorie and if you want to gain muscle tissue that is mean and lean while minimizing any increase in bodyfat you are going to have to consume more calories than you burn. The best way to do this is to record everything you eat for three days and average your calories. Protein is comprised of amino acids that are the very building blocks of lean muscle tissue. So, it you want more muscle, you need more protein. Using our 200-pound hypothetical, you should consume 1.5 grams of protein per pound, which comes to 300 grams per day, spread over 5-6 meals per day. You’ll want to eat chicken, fish, turkey, egg whites, lean red meat and, of course, protein drinks.

When it comes to carbs, keep them at one gram per pound of body weight, 200 grams in our hypothetical. Again, we’re trying to gain muscle here and not fat and the most common mistake that people make is loading up on tons of carbs and ending up adding lots of bodyfat. Not good. Choose slow burning carbs like oatmeal, yams, potatoes, rice and certain fruits including apples, oranges, grapes, peaches and berries.

Last but not least, we have fats. Yes, fats. But not just any fats, unsaturated fats. These fats have a tremendous spectrum of health benefits, most notably having the potential to lower your risk of heart disease by reducing the total and LDL (the bad one) cholesterol. In fact, one type of unsaturated fat, omega-3 fatty acids, may also protect against irregular heartbeats and help lower blood pressure levels. Foods high in unsaturated fats include olive, peanut and canola oils, avocados and most nuts and nut butters. Good sources of omega-3s include fatty, cold-water fish, such as salmon, as well as flaxseeds, flax oil and walnuts.

Training Guidelines

As a general rule, you’ll want to get in the gym three to five days per week and make sure that every body part gets a least one intense workout per week.
